April Coffee Roasters

Since 2017 · Patrik Rolf

Overview

April was founded in Copenhagen in 2017 by Patrik Rolf, the Swedish-born former head of roastery at Berlin's Five Elephant who placed second at the 2019 World Brewers Cup in Boston. Rolf began by roasting on a 15kg Loring at Copenhagen's Factory Roastlab, working with a single green importer to grow alongside producers; April has since opened two concept cafes in Copenhagen and developed its own April Brewer pour-over.

Known for

  • Patrik Rolf — 2019 World Brewers Cup runner-up (Boston)
  • Nordic-style ultralight roasting with single-importer green sourcing
  • April Brewer — proprietary pour-over dripper for light-roast extraction
  • Cafe-as-living-room concept in Copenhagen rather than traditional retail
  • From Nerd to Pro — Rolf's 2022 memoir, printed on paper made of nine recycled takeaway cups per book

Why it matters

April represents the next step in Nordic light-roast lineage — Rolf trained at da Matteo and Five Elephant, names Tim Wendelboe as his coffee inspiration, and is building the rare roastery-only specialty brand that is internationally distributed but quietly local. The April Brewer is one of the few founder-developed brewing devices to find broad professional adoption.
