Brave Bean Coffee Company

Brave Bean Coffee Company roasts in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania.

Since 2023 · Milo Speranzo, Ray Ramey

Overview

Brave Bean Coffee Company is a service-disabled-veteran-owned roaster based in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, a small borough outside Pittsburgh. Co-founder Milo Speranzo first tasted specialty coffee while deployed with the US Air Force in Colombia, and after 13 years of service came home to open The Vault Coffeehouse inside a former Pitcairn bank. With longtime friend and tech-sector colleague Ray Ramey, Speranzo rebranded the business as Brave Bean, added a second cafe on Pittsburgh's North Shore, and built it into a full roasting operation with national e-commerce. Coffee is roasted in-house on a Loring S15 Falcon.

Known for

  • Service-disabled-veteran-owned roaster founded by 13-year US Air Force veteran Milo Speranzo
  • Grew out of The Vault Coffeehouse, opened in a former Pitcairn bank
  • In-house roasting on a Loring S15 Falcon
  • Military-themed lineup: Vertical Take Off Dark, First Responder Medium, Sergeant's Sip Espresso, Twilight Tonic Decaf
  • Hosts Warrior Canine Connection service-dog training and supports the Wounded Warrior Project

Why it matters

Brave Bean treats the cafe as a veteran community hub first, with a Veterans Spotlight wall, service-dog training sessions, and fundraising for veteran programs, and the coffee as the way to fund it. It is one of the few veteran-owned brands that roasts its own coffee rather than white-labeling, and it is working toward a nonprofit that would let veterans own and run Brave Bean coffee trucks.
