Overview
Nguyen Coffee Supply is America's first specialty Vietnamese coffee importer and roaster, founded in 2018 by Sahra Nguyen — a first-generation Vietnamese American documentary filmmaker (NBC News' "Deported") and 2018 Google Next Gen Tech Policy Leader. The Brooklyn roastery operates a direct-trade relationship with Mr. Ton, a fourth-generation farmer in Vietnam's Central Highlands, and broke into national retail at Whole Foods (2023) and Walmart (2025).
Known for
- First specialty Vietnamese coffee importer and roaster in the US
- Direct trade with fourth-generation farmer Mr. Ton (Central Highlands, Vietnam)
- Launched the Robusta Pledge to advance robusta farming communities
- AAPI-founded, woman-owned
- Ready-to-drink canned line in 260+ Walmart stores (2025)
- Phin filter brewing accessories alongside coffee
Why it matters
Vietnamese coffee — and robusta broadly — has been structurally excluded from third-wave specialty culture for two decades, treated as commodity-grade by default. Nguyen Coffee Supply's case for specialty robusta, combined with national retail breakthroughs at Whole Foods and Walmart, is the most visible reframing of that exclusion in the US. The Robusta Pledge commits the company to producer-community investment, and the brand's national-press footprint (NBC, NYT, LA Times, TED) validates the editorial premise at scale.
