La Casa del Caffè Tazza d'Oro

Since 1944 · Antigua Tazzadoro / La Casa del Caffè al Pantheon (founding family)

Overview

Antigua Tazzadoro was founded as a Roman coffee roastery in 1944, with the bar — La Casa del Caffè al Pantheon — opening on Via degli Orfani in 1946 as a tasting room where customers could try blends before buying beans. It is the only artisan vintage roaster still operating in the historic centre of Rome, situated a few hundred metres from the Pantheon and across the small piazza from the Italian Senate. Branded under both Tazza d'Oro and Antigua Tazzadoro, the company is best known for its Regina line of blends including the Regina Jamaica Blue Mountain, the granita di caffè con panna (a layered iced espresso with whipped cream), and a Roman price point unusually accessible for a heritage tourist destination.

Why it matters

Tazza d'Oro is one of two anchor heritage roasteries in Rome's historic centre — Sant'Eustachio (founded 1938) being the other — and the only one still actively roasting on-site. The combination is what defines the Roman coffee tradition: dark-roast Italian house style at a price working Romans actually pay (espresso ~€1), in spaces unchanged in 80 years. The granita di caffè recipe is unique to Tazza d'Oro and a tourist destination on its own merits.
