Common Man Coffee Roasters was founded in 2013 by Australian entrepreneur Harry Grover in partnership with Five Senses C
Mr. Tan Tiong Hoe began his coffee apprenticeship at age 16 in 1960 with the Dutch trading firm Mirandolle Voute & Co. and founded Tiong Hoe & Company at age 19 in 1963 — making it Singapore's oldest local coffee roaster. The specialty arm was launched in 2014 by next-generation co-founders Jacob and Juliana, who converted Mr. Tan's twenty-year-old Queenstown Stirling Road office into the current café and roastery, now expanded to VivoCity (2019), Bukit Timah and Marine Parade.
Singapore's only true heritage specialty operation — the 60-year family lineage gives Tiong Hoe a credibility no third-wave entrant can manufacture, and the 2014 generational handover from Mr. Tan to Jacob and Juliana made it a working model for Southeast Asian family coffee businesses crossing into specialty.
