Réunion

Le Café des Marrons

Overview

Le Café des Marrons is a 100% Réunion-based artisan roaster sourcing direct from Indian Ocean and African farmers (Réunion, Madagascar, Mauritius), with a Creole-tradition wood-fire roasting program. The brand is the sister operation of Mafate Café, awarded International Best Coffee Shop by Lux Life magazine in 2023 and grand laureate of Réunion's 2022 Entreprise et Territoire trophy.

Known for

  • Réunion roaster operating on the island
  • wood-fire roasting (Creole tradition)
  • Bourbon Pointu, Café la Cour, Bourbon Rond varieties
  • short-circuit Indian Ocean direct sourcing
  • sister to award-winning Mafate Café

Why it matters

Réunion (île Bourbon) is where the Bourbon variety originally diversified, and Bourbon Pointu Laurina is one of the world's rarest coffees. Most Bourbon Pointu is roasted off-island in mainland France or by Coopérative Bourbon Pointu's contracted technician. Le Café des Marrons is the rare Réunion-domiciled operation roasting Bourbon Pointu and other Réunion lots on Réunion soil, in the Creole wood-fire style — a meaningful counter to the off-island roasting that the originating territory loses.
