Le Piantagioni del Caffè

Since 1994 · Claudio Corallo, Enrico Meschini (controlling stake 2000)

Overview

Le Piantagioni del Caffè was founded in Livorno in 1994 around a small group of friends led by Florence-based tropical agronomist Claudio Corallo, who needed an outlet for the exceptional Robusta from his two Congo plantations — hence the name 'The Coffee Plantations.' Enrico Meschini, scion of Tuscan heritage roaster Arcaffè (Meschini family, founded 1895) and a working ornithologist, bought a controlling stake in 2000 and turned the company into Italy's earliest single-estate specialty pioneer; the next-generation Iacopo and Prunella Meschini led an 18-month rebrand around 2020.

Known for

  • Italy's earliest single-estate specialty roaster
  • Founder member of CSC (Certified Specialty Coffee) Association
  • SCA Pioneer Member (since SCAE founding)
  • Three product lines: Di Piantagione, Specialty People Blends, Dirompenti
  • Direct producer relationships in Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia, Peru

Why it matters

Italy's first true single-estate specialty roaster — Meschini was buying single-plantation lots a decade before the rest of European specialty caught on, and the company has since become a quiet bridge between traditional Italian espresso culture and the global specialty movement.
