Coffee Manufactory

Overview

Coffee Manufactory was founded in fall 2016 as the in-house roasting arm of Tartine Bakery — co-founders Chad Robertson and Elisabeth Prueitt called off a planned merger with Blue Bottle in 2015 and instead recruited Verve Coffee CEO Chris Jordan (also formerly Starbucks's Director of Coffee Quality) to build their own program. Jordan brought a trio of senior Verve alumni — Devin Chapman (retail), Jeremy Brooks (roasting), Maja Vojnovic (sales/marketing) — and the operation initially shared the Berkeley Co-Ro Loring before opening its own Mission District facility next to Heath Ceramics, plus subsequent expansions to Oakland Jack London Square and Las Vegas.

Why it matters

Coffee Manufactory is the most important food-and-coffee crossover roaster of the third-wave era — Tartine's culinary credibility plus a Verve-trained leadership team made it the rare bakery roaster taken seriously by the specialty world, and the Califia partnership (2018) extended that influence into ready-to-drink at scale.
