Kona Earth

Overview

Kona Earth is a family-owned 100% Kona coffee farm and on-site roastery at ~2,000 feet on the slopes of Hualālai in Hōlualoa, taken over during the pandemic by Steve and Joanie Wynn. The operation is crop-to-cup vertically integrated — they grow the cherry, micro-batch roast on the farm, and ship whole-bean farm-direct, with the actual roast date printed on every bag rather than a 'best by' approximation.

Known for

  • Roast date printed on every bag (not 'best by')
  • 100% Kona — single-estate grown on Hualālai at ~2,000 ft
  • Crop-to-cup vertical integration on-farm
  • Micro-batch roasted on-site
  • Global Coffee Awards Hawaii Origin Roasted category winner

Why it matters

Most US specialty roasters obscure roast date with 'best by' stamps or omit it entirely; Kona Earth treats roast date as front-of-bag information, which is the rare disclosure stance that aligns with how serious coffee drinkers actually want to time their bags. They're also one of the small set of producer-roasters in the Kona belt vertically integrating cultivation, processing, and roasting on a single family farm — the editorially honest version of the '100% Kona' label that the broader Hawaiian market routinely dilutes.
