Meraki Coffee Roasters

Since 2015 · Mabrouq

Overview

Meraki Coffee Roasters was founded around 2015 in Malé by SCAA-trained Maldivian roaster Mabrouq, who imported the country's first dedicated roaster setup and built a 100% Maldivian barista team. The brand is named for the Greek concept of pouring soul and creativity into a craft, and it operates from a red-brick interior on Husnuheena Magu with a hand-built precision roaster guided by software and thermoprobes.

Known for

  • The Maldives's first dedicated specialty coffee roastery
  • Founder Mabrouq, SCAA-trained, first lead roaster in the country
  • 100% Maldivian barista and roasting team, including colleague Leevan
  • Hand-built coffee roaster designed for Meraki's precision-based style with software-controlled thermoprobes
  • Bean-to-Cup hospitality solutions program for Maldivian luxury resorts launched January 2017

Why it matters

Maldivian hospitality is one of the highest-margin coffee markets in the world (resort-driven, high-end), but historically depended entirely on imported roasted coffee. Meraki built the local infrastructure — the roastery, the trained Maldivian barista bench, the hospitality solutions program — that lets Maldivian resorts serve coffee actually roasted in the country.
