Ti'Kafé

Since 2012 · Maxime Constantin

Overview

Ti'Kafé is Martinique's only artisanal coffee roastery, founded 2012 by Maxime Constantin in the former Hardy rum distillery building at Tartane on the Caravelle peninsula, with a second site opened 2019 at Domaine du Château Gaillard, Trois-Îlets. The operation roasts on a 40+ year-old gas drum — described as the only one of its kind on the island — and buys local Martinique-grown Typica from individual home growers (Morne des Esses) alongside Caribbean greens.

Why it matters

Martinique is the genealogical origin of Caribbean arabica coffee — Captain Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu brought the first coffee tree to Le Prêcheur in 1721, and Jamaica's prestigious Blue Mountain descends from Martinique stock. Production peaked at 18-19 million plants by 1777, then collapsed under sugarcane displacement and disease. Ti'Kafé is the sole on-island artisanal torréfacteur sustaining the local Typica revival, and the ancient Hardy distillery setting plus a forthcoming local-rhum collaboration ground the operation in Martinique's heritage rather than imported French métropole roasting culture.
