Hausbrandt Trieste 1892

Since 1892 · Hermann Hausbrandt

Overview

Hausbrandt was founded in 1892 in Trieste — then the Austro-Hungarian Empire's third city and a primary Mediterranean coffee port — by Hermann Hausbrandt, an Austrian merchant-marine captain who invented one of the first industrial roast-and-cool machines and was the first roaster anywhere to package processed blends in sealed metal containers at his own facility. After Hausbrandt's death the company passed through his son Ermanno, brother Robert and son-in-law Federico Dietrich before reaching the Zanetti family; current chairman Martino Zanetti has led it since 1988, with son Fabrizio as managing director from 2005. Coffee is roasted at the unified Nervesa della Battaglia plant in Treviso province, and Hausbrandt Trieste 1892 S.p.A. now distributes to roughly 70 countries.

Why it matters

One of the founding houses of modern Trieste coffee, alongside illy and the city's Coffee Traders Association (founded 1891). Hausbrandt's sealed-container packaging and industrial roaster are early structural innovations that shaped 20th-century commodity coffee, and the Zanetti family stewardship since 1988 has kept it operating through both heritage and contemporary tiers.
