Manhattan Coffee Roasters

Since 2017 · Esther Maasdam, Ben Morrow

Overview

Manhattan was founded in March 2017 in Rotterdam by Esther Maasdam — multi-time Dutch Latte Art Champion and 2017 Dutch Cup Tasters Champion — and her partner Ben Morrow, the Australian two-time winner of the Coffee Masters tournament. The name nods to Rotterdam's nickname 'Manhattan aan de Maas' (Manhattan on the Maas) and its bright pink electric Typhoon roaster has become the brand's visual signature.

Known for

  • Bright pink 20kg electric Typhoon roaster — convective fluid-bed style
  • Esther Maasdam — Dutch Latte Art Champion 2011-2014, 5th in World 2013, Dutch Cup Tasters Champion 2017
  • Ben Morrow — two-time Coffee Masters winner (London and New York editions)
  • Hosts Onyx Coffee Lab's European production — roasts to Onyx-supplied profiles for European customers
  • Erasmus Bridge ('The Swan') logo by Goddog's Jessica de Ligt

Why it matters

Manhattan is one of the rare European roasteries built by two competition-veteran baristas turned operators, and the Onyx Coffee Lab partnership — where Manhattan roasts to Onyx's profiles for the European market — is an unusual model that solves a real distribution problem for transatlantic specialty brands. The pink Typhoon also positions them as a visible test case for fully-electric convective roasting at scale.
