Mostra Coffee

Since 2013 · Beverly Magtanong, Sam Magtanong, Jelynn Malone, Mike Arquines

Overview

Mostra was founded in 2013 in San Diego by four Filipino-American friends — Beverly Magtanong (opera background), Sam Magtanong (Army veteran), Jelynn Malone (TV/performing arts) and chef Mike Arquines — after Beverly and Jelynn realized on a 2009 Philippines volunteer trip that buying coffee at fair prices would do more for farmers than charity. The name is Italian for 'exhibition'. They were named Roast Magazine's Micro Roaster of the Year in 2020, and head roaster Nick Berardi won the 2022 US Coffee Roasters Championship.

Known for

  • Roast Magazine Micro Roaster of the Year (2020)
  • Head roaster Nick Berardi — 2022 US Coffee Roasters Championship winner
  • Four Filipino-American co-founders sourcing directly from Philippine coffee farms
  • 100+ craft brewery collaborations on coffee-flavored beers (over 400 collaborations to date)
  • Founded after a 2009 volunteer trip to the Philippines, with the explicit mission of paying Filipino farmers fair-trade-plus prices

Why it matters

Mostra is the most visible Filipino-American specialty roaster in the United States and the strongest single advocate for Philippine origin coffee. The 2020 Roast Magazine and 2022 USCRC wins mean their advocacy has institutional credibility — they're not just selling a story, they're winning the technical competitions that established US roasters compete in.
